Two Italian tourists in their 20s, jumped into the sea in Cais do Sardine, Caniçal late yesterday evening.
The incident was witnessed by several people in the area who raised the alert, ensuring that the Funchal Maritime Search and Rescue Subcenre sent out a SANAS team.
The vessel was already on its way to the site to ascertain the whereabouts and state of health of the two individuals, whose location could not be correctly ascertained, before they received a phone call to say that the tourists had swum ashore.
As you can imagine, the SANAS Madeira crew were unhappy about the situation.
Their statement read:
“These thoughtless acts, careless and carefree that, in addition to the activation of a sea rescue team means they put lives at risk in a frivolous and uncaring way.”
