Six Foreigners Detained

Six men of foreign nationality, aged between 17 and 66 years old were detained by the Security Squad and Border Control at Madeira Airport for forged documents and the possession of a prohibited weapon.

According to the PSP, the crimes took place at two different times. Four men were detained because of forged documents.  They were apprehended in the non-‘Schengen’ destination bonding area. All four were in possession of false European passports.

The Regional Command of the PSP further confirmed that while checking hand baggage for a ‘Schengen’ flight, the police arrested two other foreign nationals for possession of a prohibited weapon. “The citizens held in their possession an object called ‘cardsharp’ (this is a knife where the blade sits inside a foldable cover which can be used as a handle. The weapon is about the size and shape of a credit card that fits easily in your wallet. Its blade is incredibly sharp).

The PSP and Madeira International Airport are running a campaign to alert the population that this knife is an offensive weapon and cannot be taken on any flight.

Most crimes detected in the passenger control area are for possession of ‘cardsharps’.
