52% of the 304 respondents to the latest JM survey “Do you agree with the introduction of a new holiday on the 2nd of April (Autonomy Day)?” Answered affirmatively.
The second most voted (19.1%) was from those who disagree with the idea of introducing this new holiday, which still needs the approval of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira.
12.2% of participants considered that “we already have enough bank holidays as it is’ and 10.5% thought there are better ways to celebrate autonomy.
It should be recalled that the Mission Structure, chaired by João Cunha e Silva, chose this date because on the 2nd of April 1976, the new Portuguese Constitution was approved, enshrining that “the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are autonomous regions endowed with political-administrative statutes and self-government bodies.”
