Heavy rain and wind, which could range from 70 to 90 kilometers per hour, are forecast for the next few days in the Madeira region. The rain is expected to begin at the end of Wednesday and intensify during the early hours of Thursday morning.
According to the director of the Funchal Observatory, the change in weather is associated with a depression that should remain stationary on the island, with a high incidence in the northern area, admitting that it is a ‘cold drop’ phenomenon, similar to the one that hit Valencia.
“We will have periods of rain, showers, which may be, occasionally, moderate, until next Sunday or even Monday,” says Victor Prior.
The official forecasts the highest rainfall values for Friday evening, dawn, and Saturday morning, stressing that “this situation will not be easy to predict.”
The meteorologist also forecasts wind from the west-northwest and mountainous areas, which may be strong at times. Gusts of 70 to 90 kilometers per hour are forecast.
Given the forecasts, weather warnings are being considered for the archipelago of Madeira, with periods coming under an orange weather warning.
Waves on the north and west coast are estimated to reach between 3.5 – 4 metres in extreme cases.
