The Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Labour and Youth, Ana Sousa, presided at the protocol signing ceremony with the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) White Ribbon, a partnership supported by the Canadian Embassy that focuses on equality issues.
In a statement, Ana Sousa said:
“This is a relevant cooperation agreement between Madeira and Canada, as it reinforces the Regional Government’s continuous commitment to promoting gender equality and active citizenship as basic values in the construction of a fairer society.”
The relevance of the issues of equality and the fight against discrimination based on gender, age, or condition was also pointed out by the Political Counsellor of the Canadian Embassy, Jeffrey Heaton, who expressed his satisfaction with the fact that “equality issues are a priority for the governments of Canada and Madeira” and by the CEO of White Ribbon, Humberto Carolo, who strongly believes in the governmental and agencies commitment to the elimination of discrimination and stereotypes.
Before attending the signing ceremony, Ana Sousa had given a speech at the UMa on “The influence of gender stereotypes and the masks of masculinity.”
“Stereotypes limit choices and opportunities, reinforcing inequalities and perpetuating barriers that affect the well-being and healthy growth of our community,” Ana Sousa stressed before highlighting initiatives such as the Guide to Gender Stereotypes and the IV Regional Plan for Equality and Active Citizenship.
The lecture, promoted by the Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Work and Youth, through the Regional Directorate for Citizenship and Social Affairs, was attended by the Rector of the University of Madeira, Sílvio Fernandes, the political advisor of the Canadian Embassy, Jeffrey Heaton, and the CEO of White Ribbon, Humberto Carolo.
