House Collapse Leaves Nepalese Homeless

A house on Rua da Infância collapsed this morning, leaving the 11 Nepalese living in the house homeless.  They have since been rehoused.

Bruno Pereira, Vice-President of the Funchal City Council, told JM that four other neighbours are currently waiting for engineers to inspect their homes as a precautionary measure.

At 3:00 am, the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters and the Funchal Firefighters were called to the scene.  The Municipal Civil Protection and the PSP also attended the incident.

Later, a local newspaper, JM, reported that the building, located between Rua da Infância and Ornelas Street, was unoccupied, as part of it collapsed a few years ago. However, the Nepalese lived in the adjoining building and were removed as a precaution.

Four other people, residents of two houses in the vicinity, were also temporarily evacuated.

According to Bruno Pereira, the foreign citizens were rehoused by their employer, who also happens to own the building where they lived.
