The Portuguese Navy will command, as of Tuesday, the 16th of October, the European Union Naval Force – Operation Atalanta, which aims to protect maritime routes and combat piracy.
The position will be assumed by Commodore Armando Tinoco, born in 1966 in Coimbra, who throughout his career has held command functions on several ships, namely the patrol ships “Cacine” and “Cunene” and the refueling ship “Bérrio”, the Portuguese Navy said in a statement.
On land, Armando Tinoco served in several units, including the Patrol Ship Squadron and the Navy General Staff, having commanded the Lisbon Naval Base between 2018 and 2020.
According to the Navy, Operation Atalanta aims to contribute to maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, to protect maritime routes, combat piracy and other security threats in the region.
This operation was created in 2008 to strengthen maritime security in a strategic region for the European Union.
