Trial Begins for the Eight Suspects

The eight citizens detained by the Judicial Police on Tuesday morning will only begin to be heard from today. Sources linked to the process admit that the delay in justice will force the suspects to remain in Cancela Prison until the beginning of next week.

José Prada, Secretary General of the PSD, was also made a defendant and has refused the right to invoke the right to parliamentary immunity.

At 08:55 this morning a large security perimeter was created around the back of the Palace of Justice, in Funchal. Today is the day that not only are the eight  AB INITIO defendants facing trial, but a huge drug trafficking case is also taking place.

However, today, the 48-hour deadline for the defendants was up and all eight need to be presented to the judge. All eight arrived handcuffed.

This operation relates to suspicions of economic participation in business, undue receipt or offer of advantage, malfeasance (wrongdoing of a political official), and the prohibited financing of political parties.
