Navy Recruitment Drive

To compensate for the “decrease in candidates” for the Portuguese Navy, a trend affecting the Armed Forces as a whole, applications are open until September 30th for young Madeirans who want to work in the Region.

In an interview with JM, the commander of the Madeira Maritime Zone (ZMM), Rui Teixeira, pointed out that, although the number of vacancies to be filled has not yet been fixed, “this pilot project is being conducted for the first time in Madeira.”

“It is a pioneering initiative, aimed at young Madeirans who want to acquire professional training in the Navy and, at the same time, provide this professional service in their area of residence,” he detailed.

After the application date closes, the selection and classification tests will follow, followed by the incorporation, Flag Oath, and, finally, the Training Course for Soldiers, in Alfeite, at Basa Naval de Lisboa, taking place for five months, that is, until May 2025. “Soon after, naval recruits will return to the Region and are placed either on land, in the Command of the Maritime Zone of Madeira, or in the Naval Unit that is assigned to the Region,” explained the commander, noting that he will manage the place of service, depending on the number of personnel needed.

At the time of the interview, the commander reported that 27 registrations had been made on the application platform, resulting in 12 potential candidates. “The goal is, by the end of the month, to increase their visibility in order to reach a greater number of interested parties.”
