PSP Detain Foreign National

The Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) has confirmed, that, over the weekend, they detained a foreign national for resistance and coercion, following a public order infraction in the municipality of Ribeira Brava.

In their statement, the PSP announced that they were alerted to a fight taking place on a public road involving several individuals.  Having dispatched several police personnel to the site, they managed to control the situation. However, during the identification of the parties involved, one of the group who was still under the influence became aggressive and violent towards the police.”

“Despite efforts to peacefully placate his animosity, the aforementioned citizen continued to insult and threaten the PSP patrolmen, ending up physically assaulting a police officer.  He was eventually arrested and handcuffed. The suspect was made a defendant and subject to a term of identity and residence, being notified to appear in court to respond to charges of resistance and coercion to an official and assault of a police officer.

The PSP adds that medical assistance was provided as both the police officer and the detainee were injured.

Concluding the PSP command has issued an appeal asking everyone to be sensible this summer. “It is imperative to remember that excessive consumption can result in behaviours that endanger your safety and those around you. The PSP vehemently repudiates any form of violence and reaffirms its commitment to protecting the community it serves. However, they will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our officers and the public.”
