As part of the Museum’s Conference cycle, a lecture given by Lieutenant Philip Boak, of the British Royal Navy, entitled ‘An experience in Antarctica’, will take place in the auditorium of the Natural History Museum of Funchal, on the 29th of July, at 5:00 p.m.
In this lecture, the speaker will give an account of a trip made in the austral summer 2023/2024, on a mission of the British Antarctic Survey and the Royal Navy, aboard the ships RRS Sir David Attenborough and HMS Protector, during which, he had the opportunity to visit the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Orkney and the Antarctic Peninsula. He also had the opportunity to carry out a scientific mission for 10 days in the Weddell Sea and observe the extraordinary local wildlife.
During his stay in Madeira, from the 28th of July to the 4th of August, Lieutenant Boak will collaborate with Dr. Francis Zino, Associate Researcher at the Natural History Museum of Madeira and leader of the FCP – Freiras association, in the study of the colony of Madeira’s nunrel, Pterodroma madeira, using innovative scientific equipment, such as thermal imaging cameras, infrared and low light density to document the behaviour of birds, especially when flying at night over the peaks of the Central Mountain Massif of Madeira.
Lieutenant Boak currently serves in the Royal Navy as a Warfare Officer and is President of the Royal Naval Birdwatching Society (RNBWS) which can be followed on FaceBook (RNBWS – Royal Naval Birdwatching Society) or the X network (@RNBWSBirder).
