Navy Rescue Mission

The Portuguese Navy, through the Funchal Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Subcentre (MRSC Funchal), in conjunction with the captain of the Port of Funchal, coordinated the medical rescue of a 33-year-old Indian crew member, who was aboard the Norwegian-flagged ship ‘SPAR LYRA’, sailing 63 nautical miles, (117 kilometres), northwest of Funchal, this morning.

The alert was received at MRSC Funchal at 04:50. After medical evaluation by the Orientation Centre for Urgent Patients Mar (CODU-Mar), the crew member was diagnosed with Gastroenteritis and needed to be transported to a hospital unit.

Once the ship was authorised to approach the Port of Funchal, a crew and vessel from the Funchal Lifesaving Station carried out the rescue at around 12:20. The sick crew member was then transported by ambulance to hospital.
