North African dust is affecting the region, states Victor Prior, Director of IPMA’s Funchal Meteorological Observatory, who says that the condition will worsen from Thursday.
Heavy concentrations of dust are expected to remain in the atmosphere for the next 6 to 8 days. The phenomenon is caused by the location of the anticyclone to the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, which allows the transport of dust from the Sahara Desert to Madeira.
Occasional heavy showers
In terms of precipitation, Victor Prior indicated that, between today and tomorrow, “there may be some showers occasionally heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms.” Maximum temperatures are expected to remain around 22ºC and minimums reaching lows of 16 to 18ºC.
