December Sunny With Little Rain

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) today released a summary of the main meteorological data for December 2023.

The main conclusion is that it was hot with little rain.

The information, provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), reports some meteorological data.

With regard to the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in the last month, the extremes were recorded at the stations of Quinta Grande (27.2 °C on the 12th) and Pico do Areeiro (0.5 °C on the 23rd).

Compared to the climatological normals of December, all the stations for which it was possible to provide this information (7 stations) presented higher values, with Santo da Serra standing out with +3.2 °C deviation compared to seasonal norms.

The highest value of total precipitation was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro weather station (321.7 mm), with 104.8 mm falling on the 14th. The lowest monthly value was recorded in Funchal/Lido (15.7 mm).

Compared to the climatological normal 1961-1990 for December, the Chão do Areeiro station stands out with a negative anomaly of around 126.0 mm.

Regarding the wind, it was at the Chão do Areeiro station that the highest average wind intensity was recorded (20.3 km/h), while the lowest values were recorded at the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station with wind speeds of 5.5 km/h. The highest wind gust was recorded on the 21st in Chão do Areeiro (104 km/h).

Finally, the monthly average values of relative humidity ranged from 62% in Quinta Grande to 89% in São Jorge. The minimum daily value of relative humidity (2%) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station on December 2nd, and the maximum value (100%) was reached at 7 stations, on different days of December.
