Lightning Fills The Sky

This morning 2,723 electrical discharges were recorded within a radius of 100 km of Madiera and Porto Santo.

The most activity was seen between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., as during this time, the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) recorded the highest number of lightning flashes, most of which were concentrated around the west of the island.

From 5 am and 7 am a thousand lightning strikes were recorded between Funchal and Caniçal. As for wind speeds, the weather station at Areeiro recorded guests up to 127km/h, 95 km/h at Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, 90 km/h in Pico Alto, and 70 km/h in Porto Santo.

As far as rain was concerned, Porto Moniz was the most affected with 30 mm of rain recorded between midnight and 5 a.m. and 11 mm falling in just 10 minutes. São Vicente was also affected, with 4.9 mm of rain falling in 10 minutes and a total of 21.5 mm of precipitation in 5 hours.
