Ricardo Lume, the deputy of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has written a draft regional legislative decree, entitled ‘A Regional sterilisation and vaccination campaign for companion animals and stray animals in the year 2024.’
Lume notes that “Madeira was the first region in the country to prohibit the euthanasia of pets and stray animals, yet despite several initiatives and campaigns, the situation has worsened, especially after the pandemic.
The communist deputy says that it is necessary for there to be greater articulation between the various entities, government, municipalities, and associations, in order for the situation to be tackled cohesively.
