On Tuesday afternoon, there were huge queues outside the Horários do Funchal service desk at the Anadia Shopping Centre. At one point, there were at least 300 people, mainly youngsters waiting to purchase their January bus passes.
Many of those queueing were students waiting to take advantage of the new free bus pass available for students up to the age of 23, and senior citizens aged 65 and over.
One woman told journalists that there were 85 people in front of her. While others resigned themselves to sitting on the floor, the more sensible went off and grabbed a cup of coffee to while away the time.
