A Rainy Start to Christmas

Current weather forecasts indicate that it could rain over Christmas.

The Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) has announced that between the 22nd and 26th of December, the “weather in the Madeira archipelago will be influenced by an anticyclone, located to the north” which will gradually move towards the Iberian Peninsula.” As if that were not enough, Madeira will also be under the influence of “an altitude depression centered south/southeast”

Thus, states the IPMA, there will be periods of overcast skies and generally weak and infrequent showers between the 22nd and 24th.

Wind speeds are expected to be light to moderate from the east/northeast, sometimes strong in the highlands, and will weaken from the night of the 22nd to the 23rd. From then on wind speeds are expected to drop and become generally weak.

Maximum temperatures are expected to register, in general between 16ºC and 22°C, being lower in the highlands where values between 10ºC and 12°C can be recorded. While minimum temperatures should register between 12ºC and 18°C.  These will be considerably lower in the mountainous regions where temperatures are expected to drop to around 0ºC and 5°C.
