Journalists Banned From Poverty Conference

Given that journalists were forbidden access to the II Discussion Forum integrated into the Study on the Characterisation of Poverty in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP)  presented today a protest vote to the Legislative Assembly.

“Being a public event and publicised by the organisers who appear to be counting on public support and money, it is unacceptable that the journalists wishing to attend the seminar were prevented from entering and therefore prevented from fulfilling their job of informing the population.  This very act undermines journalistic freedom.”

Faced with what it considers to be a “limitation on freedom of information and access to information,” the PCP also calls for “such oppressive and non-transparent acts not to be repeated, for the sake of democracy.”
