Fires and Theft Leave IPMA Vulnerable

The fires that affected the west of Madeira last month also destroyed the Lombo da Terça Meteorological Station and the Thunderstorm Detector, which were located next to Casa do Elias.

Vítor Prior, Director of the Funchal Meteorological Observatory, inspected the sites last Saturday and estimates that the damage is around the 70 to 80 thousand euros mark. As if this wasn’t enough, the head of IPMA also revealed that equipment located at the Bica da Cana Meteorological Station had been stolen.

Without this equipment, the IPMA is unable to collect important data, namely in terms of rainfall, from these areas.

It is sad, but our island is changing.
