Madeira Part of Cyber Defence Exercise

In a press release, the Regional Secretary for Finance says that Madeira is gaining maturity in responding to cyberattacks and is taking part in the annual cyber defence exercise of Éxercito Portuguese.

The press release states:

“The Army’s annual cyber defense exercise Portuguese “CIBER PERSEU” began on Monday, with the simulation of several attacks in cyberspace, testing the concerted response capacity between the various entities involved, including the Regional Government.

The initiative, which runs until Thursday, the 9th, aims to assess and train the Army’s response capacity in the face of the occurrence of cyberattacks, national or international, that affect the Communications and Information Systems that support the Command and Control, calling into question the achievement of the information superiority of the Land Forces.

Constituting a unique opportunity for cooperative training – also offered to organisations outside the Army – the Regional Government, through the Regional Directorate of Informatics (DRI) is also part of the group of dozens of national organisations involved. Not unrelated to this very significant adhesion is the fact that the legislation that regulates the protection of personal data at national level, as well as the obligations regarding the protection of critical infrastructures and essential services, has recently been published.

This exercise thus materialises an opportunity to conduct specialised training, contributing to the consolidation of the construction of the cyber defence capacity in the Army and to the National Cybersecurity, allowing the Region to analyze vulnerabilities and assess the emerging risks of cyberspace, testing, for this purpose, procedures, and capabilities.

In the Region, the exercise is conducted by the Cybersecurity Services and involves, in addition to the DRI, which encompasses the entire direct administration, IASAÚDE – Institute of Health Administration, the Regional Civil Protection Service, ARM – Water and Waste of Madeira, the Institute of Social Security of Madeira, StartUp Madeira, ARDITI and the Education and Tourism sectors, among other organisms.

To this end, a cyberspace crisis management cell was set up at DRI – integrating representatives of the bodies most affected by the exercise scenario – and the Cybersecurity Operations Centre, which ensures the monitoring of incidents, the management of information flows and the technical response, in an integrated and articulated manner, with the technical teams of the different bodies.”
