Homeless: 90% of Those on Streets Are Drug Addicts

The multidisciplinary team for coordination, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation of the municipal strategy for homeless people in Funchal was presented at the Municipal Security Council.

The work of this multidisciplinary team is to know who the people who are on the street are, what kind of life they have, what substances they are consuming, and where they come from. At the meeting, there was already an opening to work in cooperation with the Judiciary Police and the Public Security Police, and the result of this work, which brings together the efforts of various entities, will be brought to the attention of the Minister of Internal Administration (MAI)

A curious fact that emerged from this meeting was that “among 100 or 120 people who are on the street, 90% have nothing to do with economic difficulties. They are consumers, with the aggravating factor that many of the substances are not even on the list of illegal substances yet,” said the Mayor of Funchal, Pedro Calado.
