Tourist Swept Away by Wave

A rescue operation was undertaken by SANAS this afternoon, despite rough seas hampering the operation.

According to reports, two German tourists, who were walking this afternoon by the sea, in Ponta Delgada, near the church were caught by a wave. It should be noted that an orange warning for bad weather was in force Sunday morning, which, had at this time time been downgraded to yellow.

The man was able to get out of the sea but his partner was reported missing.

The woman’s body was later spotted by a helicopter search and rescue team, retrieved from the water, and flown to Madeira International Airport where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Our condolences to her friends and family.
