Rain Reaches Red Levels

Madeira was under an orange warning today due to heavy rain until 3 p.m. Victor Prior, Director of the Funchal Meteorological Observatory of the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), told newspapers this morning that the situation “could de-escalate.”

Speaking to JM, the meteorologist assumed that the “most critical period “would have passed, although the orange warning, the second most serious on a scale of three, remained in place until 3 p.m.

Forecasts indicate the possibility of light showers until tomorrow that could continue into Tuesday.  These, however, will be much weaker.

By dawn this morning precipitation had already reached ‘red levels’ in the mountainous regions. According to the director of the Observatory, in six hours, 83 litres of rain per square metre fell in Pico Alto.

Funchal recorded 44 mm of rain, consistent with an orange alert level. On the north coast, the amount of precipitation was much lower, not reaching the yellow level, with Santana registering 15 mm and Porto Moniz 16 mm.
