Weather: Orange Weather Warning

Madeira’s weather has gone from one extreme to the other. Only last week we were on an orange alert for heat, and tomorrow, Madeira will be placed under an orange alert for persistent and sometimes heavy rain and thunderstorms from midday until 18:00.

Furthermore, due to coastal conditions Madeira will also be under an orange alert for sea agitation and strong winds, with gusts expected to reach 100 km/h on the north coast. Warnings come into force from 09:00 for coastal regions, while worsening winds are expected from mid-afternoon until midnight. Waves on the northwest coast are predicted to remain at 5 – 6.5 m. However, 11 m waves are expected.

There is also a yellow warning for periods of rain or showers in Porto Santo between 3 pm and 9 pm tomorrow and for strong wind, with gusts up to 90 km/hour.

The mountainous regions of the island of Madeira will be under an orange warning for heavy rain between 12:00 and 18:00 tomorrow and for very strong wind, with gusts up to 120 km/hour, between 18:00 and 00:00 on Sunday.

The orange warning is the second most serious on a scale of three, it is always issued when there is a moderate to high-risk weather situation.
