War Declared on Mosquitos

Due to the heat, we will see an increase in the activity of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

To help alleviate the situation, the Regional Directorate of Health has acquired 32 new traps to catch and eliminate these Dengue fever transmission pests.  It has also been confirmed that no cases have been recorded so far.

Most affected areas are likely to be Santa Luzia, São Pedro, and Santa Maria Maior.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are easily recognisable by their black and white banding.

Mosquito advice:

Use a roll or spray anti-mosquito repellent on all exposed flesh.

Wear loose-flowing garments that cover your arms and legs.

Use a mosquito net – Decathlon sell both single and double camping mosquito nets.

Create screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your house, voile curtains are ideal as they diffuse the sunlight as well.

Ensure there is no standing water in plant pots etc.

Where possible use a fan to prevent them from landing on your body.

REMEMBER: Mosquitoes are the most dangerous insect in the world.
