Regional Elections on 24th of September

The President of the Republic announced today that the elections for the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira will be held on the 24th of September.

According to the Electoral Law of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, elections must be scheduled by the President of the Republic at least 60 days in advance (or, in case of dissolution, at least 55 days in advance).

The PSD and CDS-PP have already announced that they will run together, renewing the coalition that has governed the region since 2019. Currently, the PSD has 21 of the 47 deputies of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, the CDS-PP three, the PS 19, the JPP three, and the PCP has one deputy.

Most parties agreed on the date (PSD, PS, CDS, and JPP) and have confirmed their approval to the President of the Republic.  However, the CDU was against it, stating that it would be more appropriate to hold the elections on a Sunday at the beginning of October.

All parties must now, before the 16th of August, submit their respective lists, mandatorily with 47 members and 47 alternates.
