Today, Sunday, the 7th of May, was Mothers Day in Portugal.
However, for some women desperate to become mothers, the adoption process is a long and winding road, as many will have to wait 2,000 days or 6 -7 years before their adoption applications are approved.
Excessively time-consuming for some, and necessarily cautious for others, the process of adopting a child is a long and slow process. At the moment, the Social Security Institute is analysing 72 applications and provides support to 19 children, aged between 1 to 14 years old, deemed suitable for adoption.
Moreover, 11.5% of the region’s mothers live alone with their children. And more and more women are putting off motherhood until later on in life.
