Carnival 2023 – Outside the City

We often forget that ‘Carnival’ exists outside of the city limits, so for those who wish to travel a little further afield, here are a couple of Carnival suggestions.

Estreito de Câmara de Lobos will celebrate Carnival on the 19th of February with a cortejo trapalhão (fun procession) that promises a lot of local excitement.

After the parade, entertainment will be provided by the Thelma Relva & Fénix Band.

Caniço will host its famous allegorical procession on the 21st of February. The parade starts at 16:00 and, a fun-packed evening of entertainment is assured.

The 2023 Porto Moniz Carnival Parade takes place on Sunday the 19th, with the collaboration of various institutions, local educational establishments, and the general population, all brought together under the theme of “recreational and celebration.”

The entertainment begins at 14:30 in the Port of Abrigo do Porto Moniz. The parade starts at 15:30 and winds its way through the main arteries of the village of Porto Moniz and ends on the seafront, where a ‘Battle of Batteries’ will take place.

The parade will feature the special participation of the troupes Os Cariocas, Palco d’Emoções and Associação Cultural e Recreativa do Alecrim. Further entertainment will be provided by the Association of Batucada da Madeira and the Philharmonic Band of Santo António.

The municipality will award monetary prizes to the top three ‘Group Floats -300, 200, and 100 euros, respectively -. There will also be three individual prizes of 75, 50 and 25 euros. All revellers will be entitled to a €10 participation premium.
