Geologist João Batista shared today at the XV Annual Conference of Tourism of the Order of Economists, a study highlighting the erosion of Porto Santo’s dunes, effects of human intervention, and risks to infrastructure near the sea.
According to the researcher, 1,100 square metres of the beach have, between 1998 and 2020, been subjected to high and very high levels of exposure due to adverse weather conditions.
At least 400 metres have undergone remedial work during the last 24 years by the Government and the landowners to defend assets and risks.
João Batista advocates an analysis of the costs and benefits of a full-scale operation to restore affected areas, either by national entities or by the regional government.
