Tourists Robbed at Cabo Girão Viewpoint

A woman and a man were robbed today at the Cabo Girão viewpoint.

Tour operators call for more policing at popular tourist spots and are insistent that most thefts are not carried out by locals.

The situation is unsustainable, said one tour operator, who has alerted the authorities about the successive thefts. Just this morning, a German citizen and an Austrian citizen were robbed in broad daylight. The woman, who was part of a group of tourists from Austria, placed her handbag on a wall to take photos, and when she returned her money and documents were gone.  The bag was still on the wall but her purse was missing. In addition, a German man had his wallet, money, and documents stolen.

The source went on to say, that it had to be other tourists, as there were no locals at the site.  Both thefts were reported to the Public Security Police (PSP).

More and more travel agents and tour operators, especially cruise liner agents and operators have called for better policing at Cabo Girão and the Farmers Market.
