As part of the regular operational activity carried out by the PSP Madeira Regional Command with other regional entities, including the Funchal Police Division, and the Regional Authority for Economic Activities, a 63-year-old taxi driver, born in Angola and residing in Funchal, was arrested for tariff speculation.
The occurrence also resulted in the seizure of a vehicle related to the taxi service, says the PSP in a statement.
This is not the first incident, as recently I was in the Old Town where a British couple had called the police as their taxi driver had quoted €14.00 for their journey, and was now trying to charge them €40.00. In the end, I believe the taxi driver was fined by the police for ‘tariff speculation.’
Always double check the price, and if possible ask the taxi driver to write it down.
