Speaking to radio JMFM 88.8, the Regional Commander of the Madeira Maritime Police, Rui Rodrigues Teixeira, discussed the situation regarding the German tourist who had been swept away by a wave in São Jorge. He went on to say that the search for the 36-year-old German tourist would continue until 7.20 pm, but that there was no chance of finding the victim alive.
A rescue mission was mounted when it became apparent that two people had been swept away by a wave earlier this afternoon. One of the two managed to scramble to safety, while the second was swept away. A search and rescue mission included the Portuguese Air Force Merlin EH-101 helicopter crew, drones operators, SANAS, and the Maritime Police. However, by 7 pm the helicopter and its crew had returned to base.
This is the second incident in less than two weeks where someone has lost their life along Madeira’s shoreline. If you are going out walking, please check the local weather conditions.
