In addition to a orange/red coastal warning, waves are expected to reach anything between 5 and 13 metres on the north coast of Madeira and Porto Santo, the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea has also issued a yellow weather warning for the north coast and mountainous regions of the Madeiran archipelago.
Snow is expected to fall on the regions highest peaks, and as of midday, low temperatures were recorded in Lombo da Terça (8,9ºC), Bica da cana (5,4ºC), Pico do Areeiro (4,7ºC) e Pico Alto (8,4).
Measured rainfall hit 18.00 mm per square metre in San Jorge, while Funchal got off rather lightly with 0.9 mm per m².
Due to coastal warning, the Regional Civil Protection Service also launched a red alert, which, given the strong swell, asks people to avoid driving in coastal areas (cliffs, escarpments, marginal roads, promenades, beaches).
Please, please, do not walk along coastal routes at this time.
