In a statement, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) have said that they will continue to monitor Madeira’s Monk seals to find out why so many are found injured and the root cause of the problem.
The statement comes after the IFCN found an adult male Monk seal with multiple injuries two weeks ago. Although the injuries were not life threatening, the situation is cause for concern, especially as there has been a disturbing sequence of deaths and disappearances of adult breeding males over the last couple of years.
It would appear that all those found dead, have died as a result of human interaction/aggression.
