War: Knock on Effect to Madeira

Miguel Albuquerque is quoted as being very apprehensive about the effects the Russian invasion of Ukraine will have on Madeira.  This was further solidified by the Regional Secretary for Tourism,  Eduardo Jesus, who explained that the new Madeira – Russia air link, which started last week, could be in jeopardy.

The president of the Regional Government also said that the 741 Ukrainians and Russians residing in Madeira, could rest assured, and that the issuance of Gold visas to Russian citizens would not be at stake as the European Union sanctions are leveled more at institutions and not at individual people.  Furthermore, he reasoned, President Putin would have prepared for this eventuality and thus Russia’s vulnerability, at a financial level, will not be as great as one might think at this time.
