A search and rescue mission was launched yesterday after a person had been reported missing for at least 12 hours.
The missing person was believed to be lost in the mountains, and rescue crews from the PSP, Fire Brigade and Forestry Police were alerted to the case. Furthermore, the commander of the Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol Mixed Firefighters, Sidónio Pio, assured local newspaper, JM, that although information was scarce all units were working together to try and resolve the situation.
Later on, things became clearer! The missing man was actually a tourist, who has been found safe and well. Apparently, he had been staying with a friend in the Hotel da Encumeada, went out for a walk along a nearby levada, and ended up in São Vicente!
For safety’s sake, please let either a friend or hotel staff know if you are going out for a walk, and when you expect to be back. Also make sure you take a fully charged mobile phone, wear layers and take extra clothing including water proofs, as well as water and something to eat.
