New Book on the People and Traditions of Calheta

A new children’s book, titled “The Landing in Calheta: Discovering Heritage – Sugar Route” will be launched on Monday.

The book, written by Eugénio Perregil and Isabel Gouveira, with illustrations by Rafaela Rodrigues and a preface by Carlos Teles, Mayor of Calheta, seeks to enhance and disseminate the rich cultural heritage of the municipality of Calheta, giving special emphasis on the importance of  ‘white gold’ (sugar cane) had for the people of the municipality.

The work comes as part of the commemoration of the 520th anniversary of the elevation of Calheta to a village, and will be presented next on Monday the 7th of February, at 4 pm at the Municipal Library of Calheta (MUDAS).
