Tourist Tax is Not a Wise Move

The proposal presented by the councilor of the ”Uma Nova Esperança” Movement (UNE), Luís Bettencourt, regarding the creation of a tourist and ecotax for Porto Santo, which was deliberated in today’s Ordinary Meeting, was rejected.

Responding to the proposal, President da Câmara Municipal do Porto Santo, Nuno Batista, categorically stated that he did not agree with political demagogues, especially at this time.  He went on to say that the move would harm the business fabric and reverse any economic development of the island.

Concluding he said “I cannot accept individual measures for such an important sector for the development of Porto Santo, as is tourism. We are here to help boost the local economy, and not use these types of measures for political means or to promote personal commitments.”
