The GNR’s Integrated Surveillance, Command and Control System is already operational in Madeira. The system, which monitors vessels and people along the regional coast, is also supported by the navy when physical vessel inspections are necessary.
In a statement, new GNR Commander, Gorgulho Santos stated:
“Although not operating at 100% of its capabilities, as we are still in the training phase, the system is operational, and will eventually, when training is complete, comprise of eighteen crew members and a ‘Situation Room.
One of the main priority areas in the region will continue to be the protection of the environment and animal welfare, both of which are areas that need to be developed, and of great concern to the Madeiran National Republican Guard (GNR).”
