Bad Weather Affects Porto Santo Supermarkets

Due to the bad weather making it impossible for container ships to dock in Porto Santo harbour, local supermarkets are running dangerously low on food. Further reports to local media outlet JM have also suggested that some supermarkets here in Madeira are also suffering from shortages.

Faced with the impossibility of cargo ships docking in Porto Santo and taking into account that food products are already scarce, the Regional Government decided, yesterday to set up a transport operation to send essential goods and perishables by air.  It is believed that the ‘mercy mission’ could take place as early as today, however, many believe that the earliest date will be Sunday, especially as sea conditions are expected to worsen.

Taking into account these difficulties, Porto-Santense families have been asked “to remain calm and not run to supermarkets, because the hoarding of goods will only disturb the normal functioning of these commercial spaces. It is necessary that, at this moment, people use their common sense and remain calm, so that everyone has a chance to purchase what they need.”
