Despite the negative press they have received through media outlets, guards from the Funchal prison saved two prisoners’ lives within fifteen minutes of each other.
According to a statement from the National Union of the National Corps of the Prison Guard (SNCGP), at 9:15 pm yesterday “an inmate had a heart attack, and was promptly rescued by the guards on duty and due to their swift action and that of health professionals the man survived.”
A second incidence took place at 9:30 pm, where another inmate tried to hang himself. A prison guard acted promptly, and supported the man’s weight for several minutes until further help arrived.
