Homelessness in Câmara de Lobos Is A Social Calamity

The candidate for the Câmara de Lobos City Council, and Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) member, Dalila Nunes, has said that steps need to be taken to address the homelessness situation in Câmara de Lobos.  As everyday residents and visitors to the island are met by members of society whose situation is hopeless, whether they are affected by drugs or alcohol.  These people, are forced to beg for money, she said, and sleep in the middle of the street, creating an atmosphere of social calamity.

While talking to journalists, she continued by saying that “despite the rhetoric from public entities who say they are making positive inroads with regards to the situation, we are not seeing any results!  Furthermore, the current municipal executive has recently approved a municipal plan for the integration of homeless people, but people are still on the streets!  These measures, when they do arrive, are either to late, or arrive to coincide with local elections.”
