Rui Barreto Resigns From Government

Over the weekend the CDS leader, Rui Barreto explained that although he had the political confidence of the CDS, and the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, and that there was no crime in lending money to party leaders in Madeira, he formally announced his resignation.

In a statement he said:

“I did not commit any wrongdoing, I did not commit any illegal act, I did not commit any crime and the CDS have not been party to any illegal financing. Although I have the political confidence of the the CDS, as well as the President of the Regional Government, in light of this situation, I asked the President of Madeira to accept my resignation.”

In the same statement, Barreto considered that he has been the victim of a political plot driven by a former national level party activist, who would have lent the money, and who will now be helping Chega. He also denies that he told party militants not to speak to the media after leaving the meeting.

Again, the question is, who would ruin their political career for 29,880 euros?
