São Silvestre Race Cancelled

Last updated on 26th November 2020

Among the various measures announced yesterday by Miguel Albuquerque, he confirmed that the Volta à Cidade do Funchal – São Silvestre Race, which takes place annually in the last week of the year has been cancelled.

However Policarpo Gouveia, president of the Athletics Association of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (AARAM), hopes to hold the ‘Volta à Cidade,’ known as the São Silvestre Race, in January.

Reacting to Miguel Albuquerque announcement regarding the cancellation of the race, he said that he has not lost hope and that “We will accept what has been decided. However, if as a result of an improving situation we would like to hold this event in January. The São Silvestre is one of the oldest races held on the island, but we want it to be carried out in a safe environment. We understand the decision and will await developments.”

Policarpo Gouveia also appealed to all athletes to train responsibly, without gathering in groups.
