Ten new CCTV cameras are to be installed in Funchal. At a new protocol signing between the City of Funchal (CMF) and the Public Security Police (PSP), the Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Silva Gouveia, stated that the new cameras will cover the following streets: Jardim Municipal; Avenida Arriaga; Rua do Bettencourt; Largo do Phelps; Dr. Fernão de Ornelas Street; Avenida 5 de Outubro; Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo; Rua Latino Coelho; Rua do Hospital Velho; Rua da Boa Viagem and later on Rua do Seminário.
He also stated that the Funchal City Council is committed to adopting as many solutions as necessary to keep the streets safe and provide a quality of life for all those who live and visit the city. Using CCTV has proved to be very effective in terms of crime prevention stated PSP Regional Commander Luís Simões. In the streets where these systems are installed, there has been a significant reduction in the number of crimes committed. The images will be kept by the PSP who are responsible for their safe custody and they will only only be used in exceptional cases, such as in support of criminal proceedings where they will be used as evidence.
The cost of each security camera is around €6,000 to €10,000.
