The animal charity Ajuda a Alimentar Cães yesterday rescued a dog that had been left chained on a piece of land near a house in Ribeira Brava. According to the association, the animal was shivering with cold and very thin.

A young man was the victim of a robbery and assault last night (8th if January).
Predictions made by the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), indicate that the cold weather will continue into next week, with snow falling on the island's highest peaks until early Monday morning (11th of January).
Diario de Noticias has just released a video of police patrols around Funchal, as the first of two weekend curfews starts tonight.
Since early yesterday morning, large numbers of people have been travelling to the island's mountains to enjoy the snow, however, due to the conditions the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation has closed several roads leading to the island's highest peaks. As such, in addition to the closure of the road that connects Poiso to Pico do Areeiro, access to Paul da Serra, Achada do Teixeira and Fonte do Bispo have been blocked for precautionary reasons.
