The petition calling for the protection of Madeira’s traditional urban landscape has been formally admitted by the Legislative Assembly and referred to the 3rd Permanent Specialised Committee on Environment, Climate and Natural Resources for examination.
The initiative, entitled For the Safeguarding of Madeira’s Urban Model, is led by Nuno Morna, a former regional deputy for the Liberal Initiative.
Morna announced the development on social media after receiving formal notification from the Legislative Assembly. The decision marks the beginning of the petition’s parliamentary journey, although he stressed that its admission does not mean its proposals have been approved.
“This is not yet the end of the road, but it is an indispensable step,” he said, adding that the decision demonstrated that the mobilisation of citizens had produced a tangible result.
The petition, which attracted more than 1,700 signatures, seeks a parliamentary debate on high-rise construction and the future of Madeira’s urban development. Its supporters argue that decisions with a potentially lasting effect on the island’s landscape should be examined publicly by elected representatives.
The initiative calls for greater consideration of Madeira’s existing urban character, landscape, regional identity and the quality of life of future generations.
Morna thanked everyone who signed and publicised the petition, arguing that Madeira’s future should be shaped through proper debate and long-term planning.
He pledged to continue following the petition’s progress and to keep the public informed as it moves through the parliamentary process.
The committee’s examination will be the next important stage and could determine how, and when, the increasingly contentious issue of high-rise construction reaches the floor of the Regional Parliament.
