The cost of Madeira’s basket of 26 essential food products fell to €77.57 in August, a decrease of €4.96, or 6%, compared with July’s figure of €82.53.
According to the Regional Secretariat for the Economy, this is the lowest CabazRAM value recorded since April, when the basket cost €84.12, and reverses the modest increases seen during June and July.
The decline was driven primarily by meat, which accounts for just over half, 54.07%, of the basket’s total weighting. The category fell by 8.03%, from €45.60 to €41.94, representing a saving of €3.66.
Legumes recorded the largest percentage decrease among the remaining categories, falling by 20.13%, or €0.60. Prices also declined for fats and preserves, by 4.96%, and vegetables, by 3.42%.
Fruit, bread and cereals were the only categories to rise, increasing by 3.92% and 1.85%, respectively.
Among individual products, one-kilogram packets of type 55 wheat flour recorded the largest increase, rising by 26.52%. A 120-gram tin of tuna in olive oil showed the steepest decline, falling by 20.76%.
CabazRAM was established in March 2026 and is managed by the Regional Directorate for Commerce, Industry and Quality. Prices are collected monthly through direct observation at two selected shops in Funchal.
Authorities emphasise that the scheme remains in its pilot phase. Its figures indicate trends within the selected sample and should not be regarded as a representative average for the whole of Madeira.
The recorded prices include promotions offering an immediate discount but exclude benefits linked to loyalty cards, points, vouchers and conditional offers such as “three for the price of two.”
