A solemn ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Autonomy of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and the 40th anniversary of Portugal’s accession to the European Union took place yesterday morning at the Fortress of São João Baptista do Pico in Funchal.
The event was attended by the President of the Republic, António José Seguro, as part of his official visit to Madeira. The Head of State, known for his discreet and highly protocol-driven style, has maintained a low profile and remained largely away from the media spotlight.
Perhaps for that reason, the ceremony itself has been reserved and understated. One small detail, however, has not gone unnoticed: the number of empty seats. Although several institutional figures were present, the open-air venue, contrary to expectations, did not reach full capacity, leaving dozens of seats unoccupied.
